This week at Sunset: 12-19-16 Merry Golfing Christmas from The SCC Golf Course Maintenance Staff! This past week at Sunset was more of the same weather wise that we’ve had lately. Prior to my arrival, this area went 52 days without a drop of rain. Since I’ve been here (Nov. 28 th ), we have had close to 10” of rain. As I’ve mentioned, we certainly welcomed it, but we are starting to get to a point where we need more sun and less clouds. Last week we received 1.2” of rain and a lot of the ryegrass has started to really grow. Last week, we took advantage of the warmer weather at the beginning of the week and reseeded the driving range tee to give you all more grass to hit off of. Hopefully, we should see a lot of that seed popping over the next 7-10 days. With all of the rain it has certainly gotten the moisture it needs to start rooting. This week at Sunset: 12-12-16 This past week at Sunset we started the week off with over 5” of rain and so this caused a shift in plans. We certainly needed the rain, but not so much at one time. It did give me a good indication as to how fast this golf course drains. I have been told by many of you how fast it does drain and so it was good to see that first hand. In dealing with push-up greens in the past I have always given greens a 3-hour window to drain. This gives the greens plenty of time to drain through the canopy and into the profile. While riding around after this rain event and determining when to open the course I was basing my decision solely on my experiences in the past. What I learned was that this golf course drains a lot quicker and so the next time we have a similar event then I will have a better understanding on when to open. Finally, we had some measurable rain last week and last night. We received just under 1” of rain last week and today (12-5-16) we have received just over 1.5”. This will only help with the overseed, especially in the fairways, tees, and other lagging areas. There is a cold front moving in this weekend and hopefully by then we will have a good, consistent stand of ryegrass.    The guys have really worked hard during my first week and I am grateful to have a crew who show a lot of passion in what they do each day. While we are waiting for seed establishment in the short-cut areas, we have concentrated on debris, pinestraw, and keeping our tees, fairways, and greens clean from any leaves and pinestraw from the windy days we’ve had.
