This week at Sunset: 2-27-2017 We are just over a week away from the Pot O’ Gold Tournament and the golf course is in great shape! We will fine tune some areas this week as we get closer to next weekend. We will be edging bunkers, cleaning up and weed eating areas that are overgrown, mowing rough, and anything else that will make this golf course shine even more! Please continue to help us out by filling divots, fixing ball marks, avoiding low lying/wet areas, and not parking golf carts near the greens.   As we wrap up February, I would like to say overall the weather was a lot more pleasant than January. I hope that trend continues as things begin to ‘green’ up. However, I’ve seen before in the past where March will be a little cooler than normal. The forecasts that I’ve seen doesn’t show much of a dip in the temperatures. There are a couple nights where it will get down in the low to mid 40’s. Otherwise, it looks like winter is on the way out! This week’s update is d

Golf Course Maintenance This Monday, February 27th, we are applying our crabgrass and goosegrass preemergent on the greens and collars. We will be applying this product on the greens in the afternoon and will be running the irrigation to water it in. We ask that you please stay off all greens so that we can get this task done without any hiccups. The product that we are using is very sensitive to bermuda grass and so I am making the 1st application on Monday and the 2nd application at the end of March. So, with your help, having no traffic on the greens will help tremendously with the preemergent. We appreciate your continued support! Thank you, Joey

This week at Sunset: 2-20-2017 This past week at Sunset was another busy one of cleaning the course up in preparation for the Pot ‘O Gold. Darryl and Fletcher have picked most of all the big debris up that has come down from the storms. They have concentrated on picking up pine cones and smaller debris in areas between fairways and around tee boxes. They will continue to do that as we get closer to the tournament. As far as our short cut areas, tee and approaches/collars heights will be lowered just before the tournament. These are areas that have the most stand of poa annua and so the lowered heights will keep the seedhead in check. The greens are responding tremendously from the great weather we have had. I’ve seen a lot of Bermuda growth from all of them and also in the fairways and rough. The heights on the greens will not change for the tournament. A lot of the maintenance that we’re doing is keeping them smooth and true. Also, I applied a wetting agent to the gr

This week at Sunset: 2-13-2017 This past week I attended the 2017 Golf Industry Show in Orlando and spent most of my time in seminars and networking with some of the best and brightest minds in the golf industry.  I came away with a wealth of information that I plan to apply here at Sunset. A portion of that included how to reduce maintenance on some of our out-of-play areas and incorporate a more natural or “native” look. Also, more chemical products are continuing to be developed that cover a broad spectrum of diseases, but with fewer applications. A lot of farmers laugh at ‘us little turf guys,’ when it comes to pesticide/sprayer applications as we are still stuck in the 20 th century in some areas. In agriculture, GPS has been around since the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. On the turf side, GPS has only been used within the last 5 years. Anyway, it was nice to engage with a lot of my peers as well as the many sales reps and educators. I look to be more engaged in
