This week at Sunset: 5-29-2017 Happy Memorial Day from all of us at Sunset CC, as we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice! Well, with Memorial Day here and the unofficial start of summer, the summer grasses and weeds are here as well! We had a great May as the golf course received just below 5 inches of rain. The threat of afternoon popup showers will increase as we go through June and the rest of the summer. This week there is a chance of rain in the afternoons and rain chances next week are favorable(for now).  With all the rain last week, that equals to catching up on mowing rough and keeping goosegrass in check. The mild temperatures and over 1.5 inches of rain last week has put all the bahia grass, goosegrass, and summer weeds and grasses into overdrive. We will keep the deck mower on top of the rough everyday and I will be out spot spraying areas throughout the golf course to control the threat of goosegrass. Putting green following a rain storm

We received .70" of rain yesterday and the forecast is calling for more of the same. I won't be surprised if we get less than 1/2 inch today. As you are playing, please avoid wet and low lying areas. The golf course has taken the on the rain considerably well, but there are the normal areas that tend to stay wet a little longer. Thank you!

This week at Sunset: 5-22-2017   As with most of my blogs, it seems, I kick things off with a brief overview of the weather. This week we are expected to receive 1-3” of rain by Wednesday followed by a cold front with highs topping out in the high 70’s in the latter part of the week. We will certainly take the rain and hopefully it’s more of a soaker and not a downpour like the last storm. NWS Tallahassee Forecast 5/22 This week is another busy one for the maintenance crew. We will be focused on cleaning up the golf course in the pinestraw beds as well as weedeating areas that are overgrown. As usual, we’ll continue to stay on mowing rough and the shortcut areas. With the warmer temperatures and rain that we’ve had equals to more growth from summer grasses and weeds. There have been some signs of goosegrass in a few of the fairways. I will be spot-spraying those areas with a chemical that will kill the goosegrass without thinning out the Bermuda. I did app

This week at Sunset: 5-15-2017 Brushing in sand on #17 Green. So far for May, we have received almost 4 inches of rain. The past system that moved through Friday and Saturday dropped nearly 2 inches. I don’t recall seeing more than 1/2 inch forecasted earlier in the week. This week we will see temperatures in the 90’s and a 60% chance of rain coming in on Sunday. Now that we have some consistent nighttime temperatures I will be fertilizing tees and fairways this week and next week to promote Bermuda growth. Putting green after being verticutted and topdressed. Today, we started our first bi-weekly topdressing schedule on our greens. We also lightly verticutted the greens to promote stolon activity and upright growth for incorporating the sand. We plan to lightly topdress the greens every two weeks. The benefits that I’ve mentioned are priceless when it comes to verticutting and topdressing. As we move further into the season, I will get more aggressive each

This week at Sunset: 5-8-2017 #6 green during the rain shower on Thursday. Last week, we got some much needed rain that we’ve needed for over 2 months. We received around 2” between the rain on Monday and Thursday (1.70”). Hopefully, we won’t go another 2 months till our next decent amount of rain. Next week, we will begin our regular topdressing schedule. We plan to lightly topdress the greens every two weeks. So, why topdress? This is a common practice that many golfers don’t really understand. Many golfers feel that sanded greens play poorly. The benefits of topdressing will improve the smoothness, reduces thatch, improves turf recovery, increases firmness, and improves the rootzone which will cause better drainage in the soil profile as well as less compaction.  A verticutted green Also,  along with topdressing, we will be verticutting the greens at least once every 3-4 weeks. What is verticutting? The process is using a greens mower that instead o

Course Conditions: 5-5-17 Golf Course Maintenance The golf course received 1.70 inches of much needed rain yesterday. Please help us by avoiding wet areas in the fairways and rough as well as low lying areas. Golf carts are allowed off the path and continue to keep carts away from sensitive areas such as tee and greens complexes. Thank you, Joey Davis

This week at Sunset: 5-1-2017 Clouds over #7 green.  Well, it looks like this week we may actually get some decent rain this first week of May. Today’s rain chances are pretty favorable, but it looks like this Thursday is looking like an all day event. As of this morning, we were expected to receive near ¼ inch today and close to an inch on Thursday. Hopefully, we will get some measureable rain this week, but not all at once. Last week we addressed some weak areas on # 3, 5, and 9 greens. We cut out the really bad places on these greens and replaced them with Tifeagle sod. Everyone knows the story with #3 green and actually from a lot of the additional fertilizer and favorable temperatures it was growing in, but just not at the rate that we all would like. The back spot on #5 green was another area similar to #3. The two areas on the edge of #9 green was struggling from shade. We went ahead and replaced those spots and we will also be limbing up the trees to the ri
