This week at Sunset: 5-29-2017

Happy Memorial Day from all of us at Sunset CC, as we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice!

Well, with Memorial Day here and the unofficial start of summer, the summer grasses and weeds are here as well! We had a great May as the golf course received just below 5 inches of rain. The threat of afternoon popup showers will increase as we go through June and the rest of the summer. This week there is a chance of rain in the afternoons and rain chances next week are favorable(for now).

With all the rain last week, that equals to catching up on mowing rough and keeping goosegrass in check. The mild temperatures and over 1.5 inches of rain last week has put all the bahia grass, goosegrass, and summer weeds and grasses into overdrive. We will keep the deck mower on top of the rough everyday and I will be out spot spraying areas throughout the golf course to control the threat of goosegrass.

Putting green following a rain storm. In the past this green would have a puddle of water on it, but after multiple applications of nutrients and soil amendments the water is moving further down.

The greens have really benefited the most from the recent rain. I have sprayed them weekly for just over a month now and I have been pleased with the progress they have made week-to-week. The TifEagle has really taken off and I think after we have a few more verticuttings/topdressings and our deep tine Air2G2 in two weeks the greens will be able to breathe(literally) and improve each day.

Thank you for following us this week as we strive to get better every day. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions/comments that you may have by using this blog, Facebook page, or emailing me at davisjoey@hotmail.com. Thanks for reading!

See you on the course!

Joey Davis
