This week at Sunset: 4-24-2017 The work on our new pumphouse continues. We are hoping that the work will be completed this week. The next part of upgrading our irrigation will be to address a number of heads and valves throughout the golf course. Last month, Matt and Josh (ABAC turf students) went throughout the course and did an irrigation audit. Now, we will move forward with replacing and fixing what they discovered and our irrigation should be a lot more efficient. The big project this week will be to address the weak areas on some of our greens. I know in the past blogs I’ve mentioned that we would apply additional fertilizer to these areas. Well, we decided to go ahead and replace the really bad areas and continue to grow in with the additional fertilizer. We have prepped areas on #3, 5, and 9 greens to be replaced with new Tifeagle sod tomorrow.  The rest of the week we will replace areas on the back nine. We will continue to spray all of these areas with ample am

This week at Sunset: 4-18-2017 Last week, the installation of our new irrigation pump and removal of the old pumphouse began. We hope for the new irrigation pump to be online by the end of the week. There were some minor discrepancies which caused the irrigation to be down for a few days. Obviously, the greens cannot go very long without water and several of them certainly showed that over the weekend. Since then we have had the temporary pump back up and running and you probably noticed/or played through a lot of the water. I want to thank you all for being diligent with us as we complete this process. Also, I want to thank Bob, Elrod, and our staff for keeping things in check while I was out of town. I will be sure to keep everyone informed of any vital information that we may have as we wind this project up. Looking at the next 10 days, there doesn’t appear to be a significant amount of rain expected. Our best shot looks like this Sunday with an 80% chance and around

This week at Sunset: 4-10-2017 Well, last week’s rain helped us out a lot. It dumped roughly 2 inches between Monday’s  storm and Wednesday’s storm (1.5” on Wed.). However, there was a cold front  that came in behind it and lows dipped down to 40 degrees this past weekend. It’s  never a good thing to throw in a temperature drop like that in the middle of a  transition period. The Bermuda grass is putting so much energy into growing  that a cold snap will set it back a day or two. You’ll see an off color look to  the Bermuda similar to what we saw the last week of winter. The temperatures  are supposed to be back in the mid to high 80’s and overnight lows in the 60’s  by the end of the week. Hopefully, fingers crossed, we won’t have to worry  about anymore cold fronts this spring. Last week’s rain was very beneficial to the course, but also it was beneficial to weeds and other things that we don’t necessarily need to grow. We will be weedeating, mowing rough

This week at Sunset: 4-3-2017   #13- Augusta National GC It was another busy week at Sunset for the maintenance staff. We are starting to get into a routine with mowing rough and all short-cut for the spring and summer months. As the temperatures climb and the Bermuda grass becomes more apparent we will mow fairways and tees more frequently than we did in the fall and winter months. The weather has been very mild with highs in the mid-80’s and overnights in the 60’s. We did receive half an inch of rain on Thursday night and by Friday morning it was hardly noticeable. However, the forecast this week is calling for some severe thunderstorms in our area and it looks like we are expecting to receive over an inch of rain by Thursday morning. As long as we don’t have a mess from the wind, we will be business as usual. The rain is certainly welcomed, but the other nasty stuff we could do without. As I mentioned above, warmer weather means more mowing for us. We star
