Thursday Turf Minute: Benefits of Sand Topdressing Every Thursday I will provide a tip or turf minute from the USGA Green Section. Some of these videos will include their recommendations when it comes to the health of the golf course or some will be more of a lesson on some of the work that takes place on the golf course. This week will be a short video on sand topdressing and why we do it and why it's important.

This Week at Sunset: 6-26-2017 #4 Green at sunset. It looks like we will finish June out with some drier weather this week. However, rain chances return Thursday evening with some scattered thunderstorms through the weekend and early next week. Last week, the golf course received just over 4 inches of rain including the ½ inch we received yesterday. The rain is always welcomed this time of year, but not that much in a short amount of time. Ideally, it’d be nice to have about a ½ inch every Monday and then around a ¼ inch every Friday. As I’ve mentioned in prior posts, the rain has created an abundance of growth throughout the golf course. It is a double-edged sword as it certainly brings more bermuda growth, but it also brings on the onslaught of unwanted grasses and weeds. In particular, the bahia grass has certainly shown its muscles and has really taken off. Also, the goosegrass(crowfoot) has really benefited from all the rain. We will have our deck mower out all

This Week at Sunset: 6-19-2017 Last week we were in the midst of a rain system passing through this area and the next 2 days we will be dealing with the wet stuff. The latest forecast that I have seen has rain totals estimating between 3 and 4 inches. This system is an unorganized tropical system and so we will have on and off showers much of Monday evening and into Tuesday. We certainly will take the rain any chance we get it, but too much cloud cover and too much moisture over a long period of time can be just as dangerous to bermuda grass., especially TifEagle. So, we will take the rain, but not 4". We had the Air2G2 performed to the greens last Monday and Tuesday. Overall, the aerification went as well as expected. I have mentioned in past blogs that the benefits truly will not be seen immediately, but after subsequent aerifications. However, I have seen some results in only a week from scouting and walking the greens. The immediate result has been that water is g

Friday Tip: Ball Mark Repair and Filling Divots Every Thursday I will provide a tip from the USGA Green Section on their recommendations when it comes to the health of the turf around our golf course. However, this week I let Thursday slip by without doing a Thursday tip. So, here you go... Ball Mark Repair: Divot Repairs:

UPDATE: All 18 are OPEN We completed the Air2G2 aerification yesterday afternoon. The process went very well even with over 2.5 inches of rain so far this week. The results will benefit the most beneath the turf with healthy roots and a more vibrant stand of turf on top. I plan to do another Air2G2 in August around our next aerification when we will be pulling cores. Along with the Air2G2, we verticutted the greens, but because of wet conditions were unable to topdress. It’s not ideal to topdress with wet sand and turf and so I plan to topdress the greens next Monday when we can hopefully have some drier conditions. As mentioned before, the 2.5 inches of rain we’ve received so far has definitely softened things up throughout the golf course. Please avoid low lying areas and places where standing water is present. Thank you and we hope you have a great rest of the week!

This week at Sunset: 6-11-2017 REMINDER: Back 9 CLOSED on Tuesday, June 13th                All 18 OPEN on Wednesday, June 14th #10 at Sunset CC The weather for the past week included a total of 2.5 inches of rain and the temperature dipped down to 60 degrees on Friday Morning. It appears that temperatures will remain in the low-to-mid 80’s for the next week. Also, rain remains in the forecast for this week, but not nearly the amount of rain we received this past week. All in all, the course has greatly benefited with the weather lately and hopefully that continues as we move forward into the summer. With the rain we received, all the turf on the golf course has really gone into overdrive. Because of the wet conditions on the course last week and also because of a mower issue that has since been fixed we are catching up on mowing the rough, particularly the bahia grass. Thank you for bearing with us as we get caught up. Air2G2 on #4 Green Today and tomorr

This week at Sunset: 6-5-2017 The golf course received around 5 inches of rain for the month of May. It looks like we are getting more of the wet stuff to kick off this week with a more favorable chance on Tuesday. We are definitely getting the temperatures now that we need to grow some Bermuda. You will notice a lot of the poa triv is dying back and that will only help with the transition. This week we plan to continue to stay on top of mowing rough and all short cut areas. We did have a minor setback last week with our irrigation and as a result some of the greens suffered a little bit, but mainly the poa triv certainly showed signs of checking out which is what we want. With the little bit of rain over the weekend things have rebounded nicely. Today, I applied a “kitchen sink” of fungicides and fertilizers to fight the moist areas on our greens and also a preventative for summer diseases. Next week, we will be doing our Air2G2 on the greens and I anticipate some imme
