This Week at Sunset: 6-19-2017

Last week we were in the midst of a rain system passing through this area and the next 2 days we will be dealing with the wet stuff. The latest forecast that I have seen has rain totals estimating between 3 and 4 inches. This system is an unorganized tropical system and so we will have on and off showers much of Monday evening and into Tuesday. We certainly will take the rain any chance we get it, but too much cloud cover and too much moisture over a long period of time can be just as dangerous to bermuda grass., especially TifEagle. So, we will take the rain, but not 4".

We had the Air2G2 performed to the greens last Monday and Tuesday. Overall, the aerification went as well as expected. I have mentioned in past blogs that the benefits truly will not be seen immediately, but after subsequent aerifications. However, I have seen some results in only a week from scouting and walking the greens. The immediate result has been that water is going a lot deeper now than before and also the new roots have a lot more area to tack into than before because of the lack of compaction. Another sign of some improvement is the heal time from last week's verticut on the greens. Because of the rain I was unable to topdress, but I did verticut the greens. After a week, a lot of the verticutting has really lines have really started to merge which is showing that the turf is healthy and growing like we want.

We did have the trees on #5 Red/Yellow tee and also the tree between #7 & 8 fairways cut down today. We will finish cleaning those areas up tomorrow. The next project will be to limb up some trees around a few greens and remove some of the dead limbs from prior storms. With the rain, hopefully we will be able to stay on top of keeping the rough in check with all the rain in the forecast.

As a reminder, please remember to keep golf carts behind the white lines that you see throughout the golf course. We do not need any traffic inside those white lines or around the greens. With the Bermuda grass in its most vulnerable stage with the transition in full swing it is important to keep traffic away from highly sensitive areas- greens complexes, tops of teeboxes, and other weak areas throughout the course. Help us out by keeping your golf cart behind the white lines and off the green complexes and near the tops of tees. Those of you who use pullcarts are fine to cross the line as pullcarts are lighter and less aggressive. However, make sure not to pull your carts across the green. Again, I want to thank everyone for helping us keep your golf course healthy and in shape.

Thank you for following us this week as we strive to get better every day. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions/comments that you may have by using this blog, Facebook page, or emailing me at davisjoey@hotmail.com. Thanks for reading!

See you on the course!
