This week at Sunset: 3-6-2017
Pot O’ Gold week is finally here! Overall, the golf course is ready to go. The last week we’ve been mowing rough, mowing fairways and tees at tournament height, cleaning up areas around ponds and in pinestraw beds, and sodding some areas around cart paths. We will continue to do a lot of the same this week leading up to Friday’s first round. We will be mowing all the short cut areas (tees, fairsways, and greens) each day of the tournament, weather permitting.

As of this writing, it looks like we will be getting some rain tomorrow night/into Wednesday morning. The rain will then return on Friday afternoon and again on Sunday afternoon. It doesn’t appear to be a considerate amount forecasted, but that can always change. We have been in a dry spell lately and so the course would certainly welcome some rain. I certainly hope the rain doesn’t impact any golf, but I don’t anticipate this system to be a washout. Other than that, it is shaping out to be a nice weekend. Highs in the mid-upper 70’s and cooler on Sunday, with a high of 65 degrees.





I’d like to thank Ben Fuller and his crew for shaping the front of the blue/white tee box on #10. That will certainly be a nice addition to that teebox and also very maintenance friendly. We laid the sod down on Wednesday and I plan to give it a couple weeks till we mow it. The roots are starting to tack down and you should be teeing off of it in no time. The old sod that was removed will be used in different areas around the course that has little to no turf coverage. We’ve already sodded a couple sections on #15 cart path.

This week at Sunset: 7-17-2017 Sunrise @ Sunset CC This week at Sunset we’ve started off with continuing showers brought on by the heavy damp air. The temperatures have cooled off as a result, but expect it to warm up as we get closer to the weekend. For the month of July we haven’t received nearly the amount of rain we received last month. We’ve received 2.25” so far and last month at this time we were close to 6” of rain. Hopefully, we can finish out July somewhere between 4-5” of rain for the month. These weeds have really blown up in the past few weeks from all the rain and favorable growing conditions. This Week at Sunset: 6-26-2017 #4 Green at sunset. It looks like we will finish June out with some drier weather this week. However, rain chances return Thursday evening with some scattered thunderstorms through the weekend and early next week. Last week, the golf course received just over 4 inches of rain including the ½ inch we received yesterday. The rain is always welcomed this time of year, but not that much in a short amount of time. Ideally, it’d be nice to have about a ½ inch every Monday and then around a ¼ inch every Friday. As I’ve mentioned in prior posts, the rain has created an abundance of growth throughout the golf course. It is a double-edged sword as it certainly brings more bermuda growth, but it also brings on the onslaught of unwanted grasses and weeds. This week at Sunset: 4-24-2017 The work on our new pumphouse continues. We are hoping that the work will be completed this week. The next part of upgrading our irrigation will be to address a number of heads and valves throughout the golf course. Last month, Matt and Josh (ABAC turf students) went throughout the course and did an irrigation audit. Now, we will move forward with replacing and fixing what they discovered and our irrigation should be a lot more efficient. The big project this week will be to address the weak areas on some of our greens. I know in the past blogs I’ve mentioned that we would apply additional fertilizer to these areas. Well, we decided to go ahead and replace the really bad areas and continue to grow in with the additional fertilizer. We have prepped areas on #3, 5, and 9 greens to be replaced with new Tifeagle sod tomorrow.  The rest of the week we will replace areas on the back nine.
