This week at Sunset: 7-17-2017 Sunrise @ Sunset CC This week at Sunset we’ve started off with continuing showers brought on by the heavy damp air. The temperatures have cooled off as a result, but expect it to warm up as we get closer to the weekend. For the month of July we haven’t received nearly the amount of rain we received last month. We’ve received 2.25” so far and last month at this time we were close to 6” of rain. Hopefully, we can finish out July somewhere between 4-5” of rain for the month. This week we are addressing the over abundance of goosegrass/crowfootgrass and crabgrass around the golf course. These weeds have really blown up in the past few weeks from all the rain and favorable growing conditions. Because we didn’t really have a true winter this year this has equaled to a larger breakout of these summer annual weeds. I will reevaluate with our chemical reps on a suitable/preferred pre-emergent for goosegrass, crabgra...

Week of 12/5/2016
Finally, we had some measurable rain last week and last night. We received just under 1” of rain last week and today (12-5-16) we have received just over 1.5”. This will only help with the overseed, especially in the fairways, tees, and other lagging areas. There is a cold front moving in this weekend and hopefully by then we will have a good, consistent stand of ryegrass. The guys have really worked hard during my first week and I am grateful to have a crew who show a lot of passion in what they do each day. While we are waiting for seed establishment in the short-cut areas, we have concentrated on debris, pinestraw, and keeping our tees, fairways, and greens clean from any leaves and pinestraw from the windy days we’ve had. Last Wednesday, we received the majority of the rain (.70”) for the week. We didn’t have a lot to blow or pickup and so we were able to continue with keeping the golf course clean going into the weekend. We will continue with ...
This week at Sunset: 12-12-16 This past week at Sunset we started the week off with over 5” of rain and so this caused a shift in plans. We certainly needed the rain, but not so much at one time. It did give me a good indication as to how fast this golf course drains. I have been told by many of you how fast it does drain and so it was good to see that first hand. In dealing with push-up greens in the past I have always given greens a 3-hour window to drain. This gives the greens plenty of time to drain through the canopy and into the profile. While riding around after this rain event and determining when to open the course I was basing my decision solely on my experiences in the past. What I learned was that this golf course drains a lot quicker and so the next time we have a similar event then I will have a better understanding on when to open. Most places I’ve been would be closed all day after receiving that much rain. Trust me, I want you tee it up as quickly as pos...
